Lusail International Circuit (LIC) is renowned as a top-tier motor racing venue. Constructed in just one year for $58 million by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, the circuit opened in October 2004 with its first major event, the MotoGP Grand Prix of Qatar.
Primarily designed for motorcycle racing, the circuit is famous for its smooth track and surrounding artificial grass, which helps keep desert sand off the track. In 2008, LIC achieved a significant milestone by installing an advanced outdoor lighting system, setting a new global benchmark for night racing venues.
Over time, the circuit expanded its repertoire to include various automotive racing events. A landmark moment came in 2021 when Formula One was introduced under a ten-year agreement. To meet F1’s stringent standards, LIC underwent substantial upgrades, including modifications to curbs, pit lane entrance, and safety barriers.
Before Formula One's return in 2023, the circuit underwent extensive renovations, including updates to the pit and paddock areas and an expanded pit lane. Enhancements to the main grandstands increased seating capacity to 40,000 spectators, and new track configurations were introduced to enhance versatility.
In 2024, LIC featured prominently in the FIA World Endurance Championship calendar with the unique Qatar 1812 km race, coinciding with Qatar's National Day and promising to be one of the longest races in the series.
